And speaking of Maritozzi… do you know his story?
The Lenten Maritozzo was one of the typical Roman preparations, similar to a small loaf, often filled with raisins, pine nuts and candied fruit. The recipe has origins that date back to ancient Rome, but in the Middle Ages it was cooked during the Lenten fast, when custom wanted it to be donated byfuture husbands (also called | ||166‘maritozzi’!) to girlfriends to demonstrate their devotion and, in some cases, hide tokens of love like jewels.
A little song in use in those times read:
“Today is the first Friday of March / If our boyfriend goes to
San Pietro a pija er husband / Who will pay for it for us ”
From 25th to 27th October, instead, come to Eataly in pija era Maritozzo :-) We are waiting for you!
